1 AED = ₹25.63Reference rateUpdated 7 Nov 2026, 22:58 GST
The short answer: Dubai gold is priced off the Dubai Jewellery Group (DJG) board rate — the live box below shows it in dirhams and rupees — while India’s benchmark, the IBJA rate, sits higher because Indian prices carry a 15% import duty stack plus 3% GST that Dubai’s board rate does not. On the latest comparable dates (Dubai board checked 7 November 2026; IBJA’s last published benchmark 6 November 2026), that tax stack, not jewellers’ margins, explains almost all of the gap. Dubai vs India: the comparison on named benchmarks

IBJA — the India Bullion and Jewellers Association — publishes a morning and evening reference rate on working days only, so on a weekend the 6 November PM rate is the latest Indian benchmark available. CrossRupee’s homepage reading of the same dates put the Dubai board rate at ₹12,572 per gram for 24K, against IBJA’s ₹14,145 per gram — a gap of roughly 12–13% before Indian GST and making charges are added at the till, and before Dubai making charges and any applicable VAT are added there. Treat that percentage as a snapshot of two named dates, not a permanent feature: it moves with the duty stack described below and with the exchange rate.
Why the gap exists: India’s tax stack
Almost all of India’s gold is imported, and since 13 May 2026 imported gold has carried a customs stack of 10% basic customs duty plus 5% Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess — 15% in total (Customs Notifications 15/2026 and 16/2026, amending the earlier 6% stack that applied from July 2024). On top of the duty-inclusive value, IGST/GST of 3% applies to gold and jewellery, taking the total effective levy to 18.45% of the assessable value at import, with the 3% GST charged again in the retail price build-up on the full invoice including making charges. Dubai levies no equivalent import duty layer on the metal behind its board rate, so the board starts from close to the international price. Two consequences follow: the Dubai–India gap widened sharply in May 2026 when the duty rose from 6% to 15%, and any comparison written before that date understates today’s gap.
The exchange-rate layer
The dirham is pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725, so the AED–INR rate simply follows USD–INR. When the rupee weakens against the dollar, both the Dubai board rate in rupees and the IBJA benchmark rise together — currency movement lifts both sides and is not, by itself, what separates them. The separator is tax. A worked illustration using the site’s conversion: a Dubai purchase priced at AED 4,905 (≈ ₹1,25,700) (the board value of 10 grams of 24K at the checked rate, before making charges) is a metal-value figure; the same 10 grams on the IBJA benchmark is ₹1,41,452 before GST — the difference is the duty stack, not the shop.
VAT in the UAE: bullion and jewellery are not the same
A flat “Dubai gold has no VAT” claim would be wrong. Under Article 36 of the UAE VAT Executive Regulation, the supply of investment precious metals — gold of 99% purity or more in a form tradable on global bullion markets — is zero-rated. Jewellery does not meet that definition: retail gold jewellery carries the standard 5% UAE VAT on the full invoice, including making charges. So a 24K bar and a 22K bangle bought in the same Dubai shop are taxed differently, and any Dubai-vs-India jewellery comparison should add 5% VAT plus making charges to the Dubai side, and 3% GST plus making charges to the Indian side, before concluding how much of the headline gap survives. Visitors who are not UAE residents may be able to reclaim much of the jewellery VAT under the tourist refund scheme; residents cannot.
Carrying gold to India: allowances are by passenger, not universal
There is no single “duty-free quantity” for gold — the Baggage Rules, 2026 (in force since 2 February 2026) frame the allowance by who is travelling and how long they have lived abroad. Residents and tourists of Indian origin who have resided abroad for more than one year may bring gold jewellery duty-free on a weight basis: up to 40 grams for women and 20 grams for other passengers, with the old value cap removed. That allowance covers ornaments only — gold bars, coins and bullion receive no duty-free allowance and are dutiable from the first gram. Separately, eligible passengers of Indian origin or holding an Indian passport, after at least six months abroad, may bring up to 1 kg of gold on payment of duty under Notification 45/2025-Customs. Anything above the jewellery allowance must be declared; undeclared gold can be seized. Rules in this area changed twice in 2026, so the CBIC traveller guidance is the document to check in the week of travel.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Dubai gold rate today in INR?
The live box at the top of this page shows the DJG board rate converted at CrossRupee’s stored AED–INR reference rate, with its check time — that converted board rate is the Dubai figure in rupees.
Why is gold cheaper in Dubai than in India?
Mainly tax: India applies a 15% customs stack (10% basic duty + 5% cess, since 13 May 2026) plus 3% GST to imported gold; the Dubai board rate carries no import-duty layer.
Does Dubai charge VAT on gold?
Investment-grade metal (99% purity or more, bullion form) is zero-rated; jewellery carries 5% VAT on the full invoice including making charges.
How much gold can be carried from Dubai to India duty-free?
Only jewellery, and only for passengers resident abroad over one year: up to 40g for women and 20g for other passengers under the Baggage Rules, 2026. Bars and coins have no duty-free allowance.
Which Indian rate is used for comparison here?
The IBJA benchmark — ₹1,41,452 per 10g for 24K (999) at the PM fixing on 6 November 2026, excluding GST and making charges. Jewellers’ shop prices add both.
